Shanghai Legacy | Marion Cuba | Literary; historical fiction (N)
When Hitler rose, German Jews did not flee. Assimilated and respected, they thought they’d be safe. They were not, and the only place that would take them without a visa was Japanese-occupied Shanghai. The book shuttles back and forth between the squalid Shanghai ghetto where young Hannah and her parents escape in 1938 to contemporary New York, where Hannah is in her 70’s. Her daughter Maya yearns to know about her mother’s life and be close to her. But Hannah is “like a melon that will never ripen,” her aide says. Three generations are deeply affected by Shanghai’s Jewish ghetto. After Hannah,s death, a diary turns up and her daughter, Maya, finally learns what her mother had suffered and also the heroic good she had done. This revelation leads Maya to examine her own life and make it more meaningful.
