The most damaging was the run of calls that put Karl-Anthony Towns in early foul trouble in three separate games. Second was the league's refusal to add a flagrant point to Victor Wembanyama, which kept the sport's most marketable player available for a possible Game 6 and 7.

Consider what a long Finals means for everyone with money on the line. The 2026 Finals averaged 20.6 million viewers across ABC and ESPN — the biggest audience since Michael Jordan’s last title in 1998. Game 5 peaked at 33 million. Whoo-wee. Those five games generated a record 15 billion social media views, nearly triple the previous mark. On the degeneracy side, BetMGM reported a 28.6% jump in average handle per game compared with the 2025 Finals. Every extra game meant another payday for the broadcast partner, the sportsbooks, and the officials, who get paid postseason money for postseason games.

You don’t need a conspiracy theory when the incentives already point one way. The three refs make that fairly obvious on coin-flip calls.

Before the series began, the league named 12 officials to work the Finals, and Brothers had worked more playoff games this postseason than anyone else on that list.
