There are currently three pianos in my house.
At some point, this stopped being a charming family detail and has became a situation.
I would like to say we have a beautiful music room.
We do not.
We have a house where every piece of furniture is now negotiating with a piano for square footage.
My husband is an incredibly gifted musician. He does not just play music; he understands it.
He hears timing, tone, rhythm, and patterns I do not hear. He can sit down at a piano and make the whole thing look natural - and he’s been at it only nine months.
You already know, I talk for a living.
When Bill offered to teach me something on the piano, it should have been simple.
His offer was generous, kind, low stakes.
And I avoided it.
Can you guess why?
I love learning so it wasn’t that…
But...the thing is, I felt exposed.
Even to the man who promised to love and cherish me… and apparently also teach me piano.
Doing a new thing feels risky, especially when I want to be good at everything (which realistically - I know…I know…).
Practicing a “baby piano player” song in front of someone who was already excelling felt intimidating.
I did not want him to watch my fingers search for the right keys. I did not want to ask where my hands were supposed to go. I did not want to feel clumsy in a room where he is giftedly fluent.
This is the very thing happening with experienced business owners when they start podcasting.
They’re certainly not insecure about their expertise.
They know their work. They have clients. They have opinions. They have results. Many of them already write, speak, coach, consult, lead, teach, or sell at a high level.
Then they record a podcast episode and suddenly feel exposed.
“I know this is not perfect.”
“I probably should have edited it more.”
“Please be gentle.”
I understand that feeling.
Sharing your voice is different from publishing words on a page. Your voice carries hesitation, breath, pace, personality, conviction, fatigue, and those moments where your brain moves faster than your mouth.
Podcasting has a way of making competent people feel like beginners again.
And for business owners who are used to being the expert, that can be deeply uncomfortable.
Studio and Private Coaching is the space where I do my very best work with you as you begin.
(Apparently God knew I needed a piano lesson of my own before I could keep telling other people to press record.)
Beginning anew means you are willing to learn.
Your voice is already the voice your audience needs to hear. Podcasting is simply the instrument you’re learning to play.
The goal isn’t perfection. It’s obedience, growth, and using the gift you’ve already been given.
When I launched the Substack Podcast Studio, I broke one of the traditional podcasting rules.
I did not release a trailer.
I released a prequel episode called Breaking All the Podcasting Rules.
That decision was strategic.
The title created curiosity, but the deeper reason it worked is because it named something many podcasters were already feeling.
They were tired of being told there was only one right way to build a show.
You do not need to duct tape yourself into someone else’s podcasting formula.
But you do need to know what your podcast is meant to do.
Instead of asking, “What should I record this week?”
The better question is:
“What conversation does my business need me to lead right now?”
That question shifts perspectives and outcomes. Your podcast is not another place to prove you can create content.
Your podcast must build trust, create leverage, and move the right listener toward the next logical step with you.
Not by forcing a sales pitch into every episode.
Instead, your audience feels understood enough to say, “She gets me.”
