Massachusetts Democratic lawmakers are advancing a bill that would set up a permanent 11 member commission focused only on people who practice Islam. Senate Bill S.2134 and its House companion would task the panel with identifying and recommending “qualified American Muslims” for appointive positions at every level of state government, including boards and commissions.

The commission would also serve as a liaison to the Muslim community, study the impact of state agencies on Muslims, research Islamophobia, and review hate crime laws. Members would be appointed by the governor and other state officials. The bills have cleared initial committees and now sit in Ways and Means. Muslims make up an estimated 2–3% of the state population.

President Trump announced that former U.S. Marine Robert Gilman has been released from Russian custody on humanitarian grounds. Gilman, 32, had been held since January 2022 after an arrest in Voronezh. He faced disputed charges that led to a 10-year sentence. His family said he was in a catatonic-like state and needed tube feeding.

Trump said Russia asked for no one in return and that no prisoner exchange took place. Gilman’s sister credited Trump’s direct involvement with saving her brother’s life. U.S. officials including Steve Witkoff, Adam Boehler, Sebastian Gorka, and Jared Kushner worked the case. Gilman was expected to land at Andrews Air Force Base and then head to a military hospital in Texas for evaluation. He reportedly asked for a cheeseburger on the way home.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services finalized a rule that stops the use of federal Medicaid and CHIP money for puberty blockers, cross sex hormones, and surgeries on minors. The ban covers patients under 18 for Medicaid and under 19 for CHIP. It takes effect October 13, with a limited six month taper for those already on hormones. Mental health services stay covered. States can still use their own money if they choose.

HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz said the treatments are experimental and carry serious long term risks, including infertility, sexual dysfunction, lower bone density, and effects on brain development. They pointed to the UK’s Cass Review and other research showing weak evidence of benefit. President Trump called the interventions barbaric.

The 2026 Patriot Games brought about 120 high school athletes, ages 14 to 17, to Ohio for a three-day competition. One male and one female represented each state, territory, and participating tribal nation. They competed in strength, endurance, agility, and teamwork events that included a military-style boot camp, obstacle courses, track events, and the Presidential Fitness Test.

Rockwell Myers of Utah won the men’s title and Kennadi Furman of Kansas won the women’s title. Each received a $125,000 college scholarship. President Trump attended the closing ceremony on August 11 and joined the athletes on stage. Freedom 250, the organizer, framed the event as a celebration of character, determination, and American spirit as part of the country’s 250th anniversary. A primetime special is set to air on ABC.

In March, President Trump signed an executive order directing federal agencies to build state by state lists of confirmed U.S. citizens 18 and older and telling the Postal Service to send mail ballots only to people on approved eligible-voter lists. The goal was stronger enforcement against non-citizen voting and tighter control of mail ballots.

In June, a federal judge in Boston blocked key parts of the order, saying the president lacked authority to impose those rules on the states. The injunction covers the citizenship lists and the Postal Service restrictions for the midterms in the plaintiff states. The administration is appealing. Supporters say the ruling shows why Congress needs to pass the SAVE America Act instead of relying on executive action.
