Organic discovery on Amazon is getting harder every quarter. Catalog growth is relentless. AI volume is real. Algorithm signals keep shifting toward engagement metrics, external traffic, and dwell time. The old strategy of “write a good book, optimize the keywords, and wait” is delivering diminishing returns for most people.
This is not temporary. The store is not going to become less crowded. The platforms are not going to start privileging craft over activity.
The rational response is to stop treating Amazon as a discovery engine and start treating it as a distribution channel. Build the email list. Build the direct relationship. Build the community that will show up whether the algorithm is in a good mood or not. Use Amazon to fulfill demand you created elsewhere, not as the place you hope to be found.
I’ve watched too many good writers burn out waiting for the store to notice them. The ones who are still growing are the ones who took ownership of their audience years ago. The quiet death of discoverability is already here. The only question is whether you adapt before your sales numbers force the issue.
Okay, listen. If your entire business model depends on Amazon deciding to show your book to strangers, you don’t have a business model. You have a hope. And hope is not a strategy.
