A REHEARSAL DINNER1 — Late Friday morning, LeBron James officially switched teams for the fourth time in his career. This time, instead of taking his talents to South Beach, he’s taking them to South Philly.
James is picking the Philadelphia 76ers over several teams that showed interest in him. That list included the Miami Heat, Minnesota Timberwolves, Golden State Warriors, Denver Nuggets and, of course, the Cleveland Cavaliers.
James picking the Sixers says several things. It says that he believes he can elevate Philadelphia to a championship. It says that James believes in new co-stars Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown. It says that he also believes in Sixers youngster VJ Edgecombe, who is entering his second season in the NBA. It says James believes in the vision of newly anointed Sixers president of basketball operations Mike Gansey, a Cleveland native who was hired this offseason after more than a decade of work in the Cavaliers front office.
In James’ announcement on Twitter he stated “I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team.”
This decision, in so many unsaid words, says that he didn’t feel the same way about the Cavaliers.
