Sometimes things don’t go to plan. Such as the approach to this year’s celebration of Lammas / Lughnasadh / the First Harvest for me: normally I’d be baking bread, brewing sunny teas, pulling oracle cards to share with you all, and festooning my home in sunflowers. But this year I am in the hospital with my daughter, who is struggling with her health and getting some much-needed care. Understandably, and very necessarily, thoughts of Lammas are put on hold for a bit!

But as we sit in our hospital room, instead of stressing over all the things I had planned to do but am now not going to be able to accomplish, I decided to make myself - and you, too - a little Low Energy Lammas checklist of easy but special ways we can mark the occasion.

Lammas / Lughnasadh / the First Harvest is a celebration kind of created as a modern amalgamation of very old agrarian traditions. We mark the beginning of harvest season, the abundance of grains and other crops for their important life sustaining purpose, connecting to nature and the turning of the seasons and Wheel of the Year. Associated with this occasion are the god Lugh, the goddess Demeter, bread, wheat, ale, hops, oats, corn, the sun, sunflowers, honey, berries, corn dollies, kitchen witchery, yellow candles, scythes, abundance, thanksgiving.

We don’t have to do something big to plant our flag in this spoke on the wheel and feel like we’ve grounded into our place within it. So, let’s plan small, attainable ways of connection with nature, the earth, the energies of the season and our own spirits.

Light a yellow candle, perhaps a beeswax candle, to represent the fiery sun and the bounty of the earth

Buy or pick a bouquet of sunflowers or yellow flowers and display them on your kitchen table, hearth, or altar

Buy a fresh loaf of bread from a local bakery or even just the supermarket, and enjoy it as part of a charcuterie spread or just slathered with blackberry jam and honey

Brew a cup of chamomile and calendula tea and enjoy iced or hot with meditation, some yoga sun salutations, in a thermos on a walk, or while coloring in a Lammas coloring page

And I made us a coloring page for just that! Perfect for a simple form of meditation that helps us slow down and practice mindfulness.

I also made a printable version of the checklist!
