Sandra Ann Miller · The Happyist

Hi, I’m Sandra. Welcome to The Happyist. Here we transform through holistic, eudaimonic happiness. Best part? It’s easy and kind of fun.

Know what else is fun? Tapping that little heart, sharing this ‘stack with friends, and leaving a comment!

And, if you haven’t taken the “Thank You!” Course already, please do! It’s a 30-day appreciation practice to deepen your happiness that’s free/pay-what-you-want. It takes only a few minutes each day to really change your life.

Alright. Let’s get to it:

How present are you? How in-your-skin do you feel? With everything going on, it’s very hard to stay in-the-moment. But there are so many benefits when you do.

Unfortch, the Future and Past seem much more important than the Now. There are things to look forward to and be hopeful about in the future, and things to relitigate in the past. And you know what? Both of those places cause anxiety. Do you ever feel happy in the past or the future?

The next time you feel yourself being anxious, notice where you are — the past or the future? Sure, the moment itself can be stressful, but stress is different than anxiety. And it’s important that we name what we’re feeling correctly. Below, I’ve linked a PDF of the Wheel of Emotions, which helps give us the language to put toward what we’re experiencing.

Here’s the thing: The moment is just the moment is just the moment. When we are present, we are really taking things minute by minute, breath by breath. And that’s where the magic is. It really is a gift we give ourselves.

I was never one to be in-the-moment. I was always in the future or the past. It felt so much more productive to be there, especially in the future. Always planning. Wishing. Hoping. Believing. Worrying. Because don’t we worry about the future? The past can make us sad or angry, melancholy or sentimental, and it’s sort of like spinning our wheels. We don’t gain any ground there. But, as I’ve taken on this practice of nurturing eudaimonic happiness, as I’ve continued to meditate, I actually enjoy being present. It simplifies everything.

Because isn’t right now kind of simple? We might be doing a lot of things all at once, but somehow that isn’t that hard. When we add the future or past to the present, that’s when shit gets challenging.

Being in the moment takes practice. It’s a choice to be made all the time. Once you get in the habit, it becomes much easier, more natural. So, how do you get there, in the moment, being present, in your skin?
