The Jerry Garcia Estate has announced a 40,000 sq ft touring immersive exhibit called Eyes of the World: The Jerry Garcia Experience, and the context in which it’s presented (Garcia’s vision for it, actually) changes the whole game here. Garcia, together with counterculture writer Ken Kesey and movie producer Cary Granat, began conceiving the idea more than three decades ago for a multimedia, site-specific experience that would celebrate individual freedom and community, long before the technology was available to make it a reality. The Eyes of the World announcement does not exist in isolation. San Francisco is already in the middle of the most concentrated Grateful Dead cultural moment the city has seen in decades, and the Forever Grateful exhibition is the center of it.

The photography component of the Forever Grateful retrospective is its own significant achievement. The “An American Beauty: Grateful Dead 1965 to 1995” gallery project, managed by Jay and Ricki Blakesberg, draws from the archives of twenty photographers who documented the band and the Deadhead community across three decades.
The roster includes Susana Millman, who had deep inner-circle personal access to Garcia throughout his life. Jay Blakesberg himself, who documented the stadium era and the audience cultures that formed around it. Herb Greene, whose portraiture defined the early visual aesthetic of the Haight-Ashbury scene. Rosie McGee, who captured intimate off-stage candids through the 1960s and 1970s. Ron Rakow, who shot rare candids including Garcia and Mountain Girl in Golden Gate Park. Elizabeth Sunflower, known for the 1967 post-bust jail cell photograph of the band at 710 Ashbury. Adrian Boot, who documented the legendary 1978 Egypt concerts at the Great Pyramids. Greg Gaar’s Winterland archive. Kirk West’s mid-to-late touring documentation. And eleven additional photographers including Joel Axelrad, Andy Leonard, Jonathan David Sabin, John Conroy, Paul Kagan, Herb Kossover, Alvan Meyerowitz, Bruce Polonsky, Snooky Flowers, Jon Sievert, and Gene Wright, each covering specific chapters of the band’s geographic and temporal arc. This one is genuinely unexpected, and it deserves attention precisely because it is so specific.
Dead in the Kitchen is the official Grateful Dead cookbook, published by Weldon Owen and Insight Editions, written by Gabi Moskowitz. Official means something concrete here. The book features the band’s legally copyrighted artwork throughout its 200 pages, including the skulls, dancing bears, and lightning bolts, with full authorization from Grateful Dead Productions. The structural organization was directly overseen by David Lemieux, the band’s longtime official archivist, who also contributed a curated list of his own recipe picks for the text.
