Me on my 10th birthday

Tomorrow is my birthday. This past trip around the sun took me to Banff and the Russian River Valley with girlfriends, Lake Tahoe, Boston, and Nantucket with my family, and a solo winter trip to Switzerland and Paris. I’m grateful for every mile of it, and for the people who came along for the ride. I’m equally grateful for everyone who has contributed to a Gomes Guide post, been a guest on the podcast, or is reading this right now.

I know the etiquette is to keep birthday wishes to yourself, but here's the one thing I'd really love:

Help share The Gomes Guide with new people 👯

Send the homepage link to your travel-loving friends, your book club, your pickleball group, your colleagues, your cousins, whoever comes to mind. Hit the button below, or copy and paste the homepage link into a text and share with your group chats.

That’s it.

The Gomes Guide is my labor of love. For work, I’ve spent 20+ years in PR representing food and beverage, travel, and lifestyle clients. At night and on weekends, I pour myself into The Gomes Guide: dreaming up post ideas, booking podcast guests, then doing all the work that comes after — writing, editing, working on photos, interviewing people, more editing, publishing the post or podcast, and then promoting it all on several platforms (whew!). It’s a ton of work, but I absolutely love every second of it. My whole goal with The Gomes Guide is to inspire you to travel more, whether it’s two hours from home or a destination you’ve always dreamed about. In my opinion, travel teaches you more than any classroom ever could, and it’s one of the smartest ways to spend your money and time. It’s also the best way to connect, share, and learn from one another, and it makes the world a better place.

Homepage of The Gomes Guide on Substack. Be sure to bookmark it for easy access to all posts and podcasts.

It takes a lot of work to put together the weekly newsletter and podcast, but I’ll always keep a free subscription available here on Substack. That said, paid subscriptions definitely help! They help cover costs like podcast hosting, editing apps, equipment, and other tools that keep things running.

For $5 a month or $60 a year, you can join my subscriber-only chat and ask me anything about travel or food recommendations. Sharing travel and food tips is my favorite part of this, so I’m always happy to answer your questions.

🎁 Since it’s my birthday week, I have a gift for you! Until Friday, August 21st at midnight, you can get 33% off an annual subscription, so it’s just $40 instead of $60. No code is needed—the discount applies automatically when you subscribe.

There’s more coming this fall, too. Paid subscribers will get in-depth looks at specific destinations and new restaurant recommendations. Everyone who upgrades helps keep The Gomes Guide going, and I’m truly grateful for your support.

And if you enjoy listening to the podcast, I would love it if you could leave me a quick voicemail — under a minute, right from your phone or laptop here — about why you listen or an episode that stuck with you. Below you’ll find one my friend Jen of BooksonTrains (Travel & Books) left me, and another one my friend Amy of Amy Boyle | Stories in Light and Sound and host of the Speaking of Phenomenal podcast left me. Thank you so much, Jen and Amy!

Thank you again for encouraging your travel-loving friends to subscribe - it’s the very best way to grow this community. I’m so grateful, week after week, that you read, listen, share, and tell me what you think (just hit reply). That’s what keeps me going!

I'll leave you with my favorite quote:

"Seize the day, and make your life extraordinary."

And always take the trip.

Cheers! 🥂
