Let me paint you a picture.
Two candidates apply for the same role. They have the same qualifications, same years of experience, roughly the same CV energy.
HR googles both of them.
One has a LinkedIn with a blurry photo, a summary that says, “seeking new opportunities,” zero posts, and connections stuck at 47; most of whom are probably relatives.
The other has a clean profile, a headline that actually explains what they do, and a handful of posts where they’ve shared thoughts on their industry, a lesson they learned on the job, one mildly funny observation about office life that got 300 likes.
Guess which one gets the callback first?
I’ll wait.
Now before you roll your eyes and say, “but I’m not an influencer”, hear me out because having that mindset is the exact problem.
We have confused personal branding with content creation, and content creation with being chronically online, and being chronically online with having no boundaries.
That’s also one of the reasons why most of us have decided to opt out of all of it entirely. But here’s the thing, personal branding isn’t about:
posting every day.
filming yourself in the car talking about your morning routine.
Personal branding is simply this: what do people think of when they think of you, professionally?
One thing you must understand is that whether you’re actively building it or not, it’s already happening.
Someone already has an impression of you and now the question you need to ask yourself is if you’re the one shaping the narrative or leaving it to chance?
I know for a fact, as a fellow HR that the decision about a candidate is often made before the interview even starts.
In essence, recruiters and hiring managers look you up, not in a weird way though but in a “let me get a fuller picture of this person” way and believe you me, that speaks volumes.
A strong personal brand means:
Opportunities come to you instead of you always chasing them.
I don’t mean that in a passive, “just post and pray” way, I mean that when you’re visible in your space, people think of you when something relevant comes up either a job, a speaking engagement, a collaboration or a referral. This is called positioning.
You walk into interviews warmer when someone already knows your thinking from something you wrote or shared. Trust me, the conversation starts at a different level. It shows you are not a stranger and that’s an advantage.
When you position rightly, you build a reputation that your CV alone can’t carry.
While a CV tells people what you’ve done, a personal brand tells them how you think, who you are, what you care about.
In 2026 and beyond, that second thing matters more than most people want to admit.
I know that LinkedIn can feel like a performance. Everyone is “humbled and honored, “excited to share” and writing paragraphs about lessons learned from a PowerPoint presentation. It is a lot.
But underneath all of that, LinkedIn is still the most useful professional tool most people are sleeping on.
Here’s what a good LinkedIn profile actually does for you, it:
works when you’re not working. It shows up in searches.
Tell your story to people you haven’t met yet.
A 24/7 professional introduction that you only have to write once (and update occasionally).
Let me break down what “good” actually looks like, because “good” is not what most people have.
Your photo. I cannot stress this enough. It should be recent, clear, and look like you on your best average day, not your passport photo from 2019, not a group photo where you cropped everyone else out (we can still see the arm, by the way), not a selfie with a ring light that’s blinding the entire frame. It should be just you, good lighting, and a smile that says, “I am a professional who also has a personality.”
Your headline. This is not your job title or rather, it doesn’t have to be just your job title. Your headline is the one line that shows up everywhere on LinkedIn search results, comments, connection requests. Use it to tell people what you do and for whom, or what you’re about. For instance: “HR professional helping early-career talent navigate the world of work” beats “HR Officer at XYZ Company” every single time. One is a role while the other is a brand.
Your About section. Write it in the first-person voice. It’s the one place on LinkedIn where you’re allowed to have a personality, and most people waste it with bullet points of skills they already listed in their experience section. Here is the format: Tell me who you are, what you do, what you care about, and what someone should do if they want to work with you or connect. Three to four tight paragraphs. That’s all you need.
Your activity. You don’t need to post every day. You don’t even need to post every week, but complete silence is a missed opportunity. Start with once or twice a month. Share something you’ve observed at work, a lesson you learned the hard way, a resource that actually helped you. You don’t need to have all the answers, the people who do best on LinkedIn are usually the ones asking good questions and sharing honest experiences. That’s the secret.
You don’t need to be a LinkedIn influencer; you just need to be present enough that the right people can find you and know what you’re about.
Open your LinkedIn right now and check these three things:
Does your photo look like you?
Does your headline say more than just your job title?
Does your About section sound like a human wrote it?
If the answer to any of those is no, that’s your homework. Fix just those three things before next week’s issue lands in your inbox.
Congrats to Spain! At least they really didn’t cause us pain silently and some people’s GOAT couldn’t do one job right.

For weeks, we’ve talked about the Nigeria we want. This is one of the simplest ways to help build it because societies don’t only get the culture they reward; they also get the leaders they elect.
