One art story. Once a month. Sometimes beautiful. Sometimes inspiring. Often slightly unhinged. That’s what The Gaze Mail will be. Pretty simple, right?
Right. But some of you might be wondering: what the f*ck is The Gaze?
Ever looked at a Renaissance angel and thought, “Why do his wings look like watermelons?” Same. That’s why I created The Gaze, a place where I explore all corners of art history and visual culture. Weird ones first.
Over a million people follow my videos across Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. And now I’m here too. On Substack. With a newsletter. Because I want to write more.
You see, I’ve been making art videos since 2019 — and they involve quite some writing. Scripts is what the things are called. And when they’re ready, I turn them into a video. Rendering the poor things obsolete. It’s the video that gets all the attention. No one cares about the writing.
So about two years ago I thought, you know what, let’s write a book. And I did. It’s called “Stupid Faces in Stunning Paintings” and it will be released in March of 2026 (pre-order here). Couldn’t be happier. But then I thought, you know what, let’s start a newsletter. Because I want to write more art stories. And Substack is a great place to do exactly that.
So here we are. The first issue will be sent out in January of 2026. And eleven more will follow. Heck, if all goes well, I might even write two stories a month. But let’s start with one and see where it goes.
In the meantime, here’s a tiger that looks like he is in the middle of a surprise colon exam. Which if true, would make this a very unusual-yet-fascinating painting. You’ll hear this guy’s story too in 2026. Can’t wait to hit send.
