I like to think that I started working from home before it was cool. My first job out of college was working for my family business, a men’s clothing retailier in Dallas, TX. I managed the website, marketing and graphic design and occasionally worked on the retail floor selling people suits and ties and had absolutely ZERO idea of what I was doing. TBH, I hated it.
There was a lot of guilt around hating it too because everyone kept telling me what a great opportunity it was and how lucky I was to have this successful business sitting in front of me for my future, but I left many nights crying, thinking, is this it?
Thus started my passion for building side hustles and eventually an online business that allowed me to leave that behind and do work that I was actually excited about. To say I was bit by the entrepreneur bug, is an understatement. In the past 15 years, I’ve started several businesses—some were great, some completely flopped.
Today, I’m going through all of them—from online service-based businesses to physical product businesses—and ranking them by how successful they were, how much effort they took and why I ultimately like some more than others.
If you’re someone who’s thinking about starting a business and you have tons of different ideas, my hope is that this gives a little more behind the scenes of knowledge of what it takes to run those before you dive in!
Ranking them from worst to best and detailing everything I loved and HATED about running these businesses.
