For the few of you who’ve asked, yes, I’m still tinkering with my little app, Lull. And no, I haven’t run off to become a software developer. Real estate is still my passion and business. I’ve just got two or three twenty minute pockets in my day that I use to decompress, and instead of a crossword or whatever, I mess around with this. It scratches the problem solving itch.

The whole app came out of two things that bugged me. I’d get all settled in bed with a podcast or book going, then have to pick the phone back up to open a separate app for sleep sounds. And I kept waking up with no idea where I’d dozed off, because a sleep timer is really just a guess. So I built a free podcast and audiobook player where the timer runs out and your show fades into sleep sounds instead of just stopping. And the premium part, the part I’m proudest of, uses your Apple Watch to figure out when you actually drifted off and rewinds the book to right about there. No more scrubbing backwards through twenty minutes going “do I remember this? do I remember this?”

A new version went live this week. My favorite bit is the sleep sounds now listen to your room and swell up to cover a snoring partner or a passing truck, then settle back down when it’s quiet. There’s more in there but I’ll spare you the release notes.

The next update is already sitting with Apple, and it’s the one I’ve been building toward. The sleep side becomes a real tracker. It reads your night, gives you a morning score that estimates how rested you are, and even catches the nap you swore was just resting your eyes. And here’s the part the big sleep apps don’t do: while they’re busy taking notes on your night, Lull is already easing your book down and saving your spot. CarPlay’s getting a nice round of UI polish in that one too, for the daytime half of the app.

It’s free (link below). The premium stuff is a one time $6.99, no subscription, while the big sleep apps want $40 to $70 a year, every year. If you try it and something’s weird, tell me. The bug reports are half the fun.
