The UK Social Media Ban
On 21st January 2026, the UK’s debate over social media age restriction was thrust to the centre of the political agenda following a decisive House of Lords vote. On 9th March 2026, those Lords’ amendments came before the House of Commons, where the Government moved to replace them with its own, weaker alternative. Yet the Lords’ vote carries no legal force of its own. For any restriction to become law, it must first win a majority in the Commons, where the Government retains a firm grip. This debate has not emerged in isolation. Australia’s landmark social media ban for under-16-year-olds, which came into force in December 2025, provided the international precedent that injected fresh urgency into proceedings.
