I have taught three generations of students.
The first generation, from 2003-2008, were pre-smartphone students. They had cell phones but they were not very compelling tools and were not particularly distracting beyond occasionally telling a student to stop playing snake.
The second generation, from 2009 - 2019, were the smartphone generation. During that time, technology became a greater part of the classroom through initiatives such as the mass adoption of Chromebooks around 2012. There was an expectation of some technology in the classroom - PowerPoint slides and a BrainPOP video would serve as “educational enrichment” to the class, along with other digital distractions. During this time student attention spans shrank and lecturing became more challenging.
Think about how much you spend on coffee runs in a week. Now imagine putting that same amount toward something that fuels minds instead of just mornings.
