Garrett Bucks writer of The White Pages Substack, author, community trainer and professional potluck enthusiast joined Double Shift members for a great conversation last week. We talked about how he brought his wild idea for a 50 state interdependence relay to life (turns out there’s a lot of logistics in mailing a custom-made 50 lb box to rural South Dekota) and what he’s learning about how to make an effective gatherings in a wide variety of settings. So far, the relay has stopped at an inclusive San Francisco gym, a trans movie night, a burrito mutual aid project, and many more to come.
We talked about the social history of potlucks, (and why Garrett is a lifelong fan) and we also dug into some practical aspects of hosting that I think are really helpful: how to identify your strengths as a host, and the one thing that guests most crave going into an event.
Attending this conversation live was a perk of Double Shift membership, thanks so much for those of you who support this work!
