In an ideal world, this episode doesn’t need any kind of introduction. Genghis Tron should be one of the most celebrated bands in heavy/experimental music, for the way they breeze between genres and always end up with something absolutely unique at every step. Having returned from a lengthy hiatus with the ethereal ‘Dream Weapon’ album in 2021, they’re now finally on to the next chapter with ‘Signal Fire’, once again quite a different beast, which manages to take as much from the earlier, more openly aggressive albums (2006’s ‘Dead Mountain Mouth’ and 2008’s ‘Board Up The House’) as from the skewed, dreamy vibes of its predecessor, add a bunch more craziness, and establish itself as yet another unpredictable, restless piece of adventurous music that you’ll have to somehow get to grips with. It’s obviously one of the best albums of the year so far, and you’d think the people behind this music would be as interesting and as artistically out-there as the music itself, right? Well, you would be absolutely correct, and that is why we invited the core founding duo of Michael Sochynsky and Hamilton Jordan for our usual ten rounds challenge. They picked five songs each to nerd out about on the show, and in true Genghis Tron fashion, they actually gave their selection a theme: “Beautiful but unsettling. comforting, but something is not quite right. Music for David Lynch's America...”, was how they described it, and after going through the list with them, I couldn’t describe it in a better way.

Check out the full episode on our usual Mixcloud host through the button above (or okay, just click here, you lazy bum), and if you haven’t yet, do treat yourself to ‘Signal Fire’, you won’t regret it.

‘Signal Fire’ is out now via Relapse Records.
