Hello Substack subscribers. It’s been a while. Have you seen my Patreon channel? It’s lit over there. One dollar a month gets you access to hours of brilliant content.

Don’t believe me? Well here’s a quick preview of my second Patreon post in June. Why post this in July, you ask? Silence. The first post I made in June was only tangentially hardcore related, but this one might be of interest to you here. I answered some prompts and questions from r/Hardcore.

I touched on a lot of interesting topics including the present and future of angel statue metalcore, the age old Harvest vs Turmoil debate, and completely theoretical advice on how to get a sick beatdown guitar tone. That shit is behind a paywall though, so if you want to hear it, open your wallet!

I kid. Because I’m not writing many (any) new articles these days, I thought I would break you guys off with 15 minutes of free podcast content. Here’s what I talked about:

  1. How to join and start a band if you don’t really know anyone in your scene.

This question came from a disgruntled Reddit user lamenting his inability to find bandmates in the local scene. In my experience, the best way is to make one or two real friends at shows and ask them if they can help you join a band. Here’s the thing: you probably aren’t gonna be able to do your dream project right away. It takes time to build that group of solid collaborators, and you have to “get in where you fit in” before you can call the shots. Playing bass or second guitar (aka helping fill out the lineup) is a good way to get in the door with cool people. This fool unfortunately wants to be a vocalist, Good luck buddy!

  1. Wearing cancelled band merch

This is somewhat of a nothingburger question to me. Talking about hardcore cancellation is third only to talking about hardcore mosh etiquette and hardcore band drama in terms of things I don’t want to talk about that pertain to hardcore. Most of the above clip is spent ragging on morons for wearing Expire merch. How are you a serial rapist AND in a shitty procore band? Pick a struggle.

  1. The ultimate Hatebreed EP

This was an excellent prompt — what four songs would you put on your dream Hatebreed EP. To add variety and narrow down the choices, I self-imposed a limit of ONE SONG MAX PER RELEASE, although as you can tell by the audio above, I kind of cheated. I give you the first two answers here. You know where to look if you wanna hear “Side B” of my hypothetical EP. I also spend a considerable amount of time deliberating on the Reddit users’ answers.

  1. Mosh metal hot takes

Someone asked for more bands that sound like Temple Guard and Contention, which sent me down a 15 minute rabbit hole on what I guess we could call “mosh metal”, “edge metal” or “good metalcore.” To be completely honest I don’t remember everything I said, but the above clip is my take that, despite getting credit for this style of music, H8000 and Italy did not spawn the best bands of this subgenre. Once you hear what I compare that shit to, I think you’ll agree.
