A PRACTICE

A practice. Not a performance. A morning where the room asked for movement first, and music second, and I gave it both in the order it asked.

The song is Loreen’s “Sidewalk.” I did not choreograph it, exactly. I let the song walk me. Free movement — the kind that only happens when nobody is watching, which is why I turned the camera on: so that the alone-ness would be witnessed, and so that the honest middle of a practice would not be edited out.

Halfway through, I stopped. The room asked for the piano. So I went to the piano and I sang, and I played, and the practice became two practices, folded into one. This is what a body does when it trusts its own instructions.

The soprano meets the sidewalk. The pianist meets the dancer. Loreen’s song is the room they all agree to walk through.
