Seven videos. Seven weeks. One long road through some of the oldest, most beautiful places I’ve ever pointed a camera. The Ancient Spain series is done. And now I want to talk about what’s actually underneath it.
If you caught my last post, you already know how this started: Madrid, Toledo, Segovia, then Burgos and La Rioja, then Bilbao and San Sebastián. Here’s how it ended.
Cudillero. Santander. The Altamira cave paintings. A long-exposure shot I lost because I forgot my own rule about the tripod. This is the most beautiful place I’ve ever photographed, and I mean that.
People walk 500 miles to reach this cathedral. I came by bus. It still happened to me anyway.
Spain gave me stone and shadow. Portugal handed me blue and white and violet and
I first stood in Lisbon thirty years ago with a backpack full of film and no idea what I was doing. I went back this year, and the city was different. So was I. Turns out the places that change are usually the ones worth returning to — because they’re changing for the same reason you are. They’re still becoming something.
While I was still finishing this series, I put out a video that seems to be really hitting home with artists and creatives, and it has nothing to do with Spain.
It’s not a technique video. It’s about the quiet reasons so many of us hold our work back. Not because it isn’t good enough, but because of what we’ve decided it means to put it out there. If any part of the last seven weeks made you think about your own work sitting untouched somewhere, start with this one.
Every video in the Spain series links to my free field guide, Stop Shooting, Start Seeing. If you use code SPAINVISION at checkout, it is yours as a thank you for being a part of my journey here.
My Amazon shop has the gear I actually used to shoot this series. My Viator travel links are in every description if any of these places got under your skin the way they got under mine.
The matching blog series for these seven videos is going up on my photography site next, so if you’d rather read than watch, that’s coming soon. I’ll let you know here as soon as the first one is live. I’m also heading to Cape Cod later this month, and there’s a video coming from that adventure in September.
Stay ready. That is all. Just stay ready.
