Y’all. Yo no puedo.

I actually don’t know where to begin, because never in my wildest dreams did I imagine this scenario. I know US citizens (and evidently, Europeans) can be hyper-individualistic, opportunistic, unabashedly hypocritical, and seemingly oblivious to how inconsiderate they are. But this… sin verguenza. It’s truly shocking in the current political climate. At least, to me. I’ll take that as a sign that I’m surrounded by the right people, because no one I am close to would think this is ok.

US citizens and Europeans are marrying Mexican nationals and residents, traveling to Mexico to have “anchor” babies, and making plans for “chain migration” of their families into Mexico. From what I can tell, they are doing this solely to utilize the Family Unit pathway to Mexican residency, rather than the usual reason people get married, choose birthing locations, or move abroad. This part doesn’t surprise me, especially from US citizens. As I’ve known for a decade and written for years, the US is in a spiraling downfall and people are desperate to leave. In many cases, the desperation is warranted; there are US citizens making asylum claims in other countries due to persecution by their government.

I predicted all of this. I have an entire section of this publication devoted to this topic, and I do not begrudge marginalized people from the US finding ways to leave.

What I did not foresee were people straight up publicly planning what would reasonably be deemed fraudulent or at the very least, suspicious Family Unit applications on the internet. With self-styled emigration professionals endorsing and even facilitating such things.

Even more egregious - at least one “creator” - apparently living in Mexico City because of course she is - advising people on Green Card marriages in Mexico as “content.” (Below the paywall)

All in a context where the US is violently arresting, detaining, and deporting Mexicans who lived their entire lives on US soil. When the US Department of State has launched a Birth Tourism Prevention Task Force to actually revoke the visas of people who have achieved US immigration status by deliberately giving birth in the country. You can bet money that Mexicans are being targeted by this task force. In a context where right-wing Congresspeople are introducing US legislation to end “chain migration.”

This can’t be pure ignorance. No one can convince me that US citizens who are openly advising others (as if there are no legal, moral, or ethical questions involved) are clueless about the extreme inequity inherent in their ability to essentially defraud the Mexican government into granting them residency while Mexicans are under direct attack in the US. It can only be that they simply do not care.

This next one is a doozy - let me break it down.
