Okay. I think I have figured out a major problem in disability discourse.

I have made a few videos and written some things recently about my own relationship to disability, and people keep arriving in my comments to say: you’re still disabled, there’s something called the social model of disability.

Great. Yeah. I study disability. I understand what the social model is.

But I think some of you are using the social model as though it were an operational system rather than a theoretical framework for understanding disability. Those are not the same thing, and the gap between them is where people are currently falling.

The social model is incredibly useful for understanding how people become disabled through their interaction with environments, institutions, social structures, and barriers. Genuinely. It is the thing that let me stop blaming myself.
