Some people in recovery—mostly from other drugs—assume that alcoholism is tougher to kick because liquor is everywhere. “It’s right in your face, every day, anywhere you look,” a friend, who’s recovering from heroin and opioids, told me.
I’ll raise him one. Booze is not only ubiquitous, it’s so very allowed and so very accessible. More than anything, it’s publicly celebrated.
Liquor spills into every corner of pop culture—try to go a day without seeing it. C'est impossible! Walk any city block and drinky-drinks are pulling, waving, and winking at us from restaurants, pubs, and wine boutiques.

What I really get a kick out of is how welcoming liquor stores sound. A quick poke around and I found some real beauties. Booze shops aren’t just within our reach, they beckon us, named to evoke a sense of conviviality. Inebriation never sounded so friendly and fun.
