Happy Friday! One of the changes I’ve made this year was to move from Instagram to Substack. Sharing my thought process to inspire your own reflection and refinement.

  • Data: As I shared in this week’s post, I run reports every Monday morning across my business.

    • Instagram had the least engagement and conversion across channels.

    • Focusing on channels where engagement and conversion are higher.

  • Format: I enjoy creating and sharing, but I don’t like being in front of the public camera.

    • Here I can share thoughts and insights with beautiful images in long-form (articles) and short-form (notes).

    • Combines the best of analytical (X words) and creative (Instagram visuals). It feeds both sides of my brain.

  • Energy: I’ve always heavily curated my follow list across platforms, but they’ve prioritized “for you/discovery” instead of “following.”*

    • On Instagram almost every other story is an ad.

    • Reels suck you into dramatic stories and forget why you opened the app.

    • I prefer my judgement and discernment over their algo.

*Note: many platforms are prioritizing discovery over following. They are rewarding engagement (high dopamine) over loyalty.

  • Notes: I use to share thoughts, other posts, and beautiful carousels. This leans toward my personal interests and doesn’t fall into content categories.

  • Articles: I use to share advice and tips for service-based business owners on leadership and operations. My goal is to support raising expectations and standards in small businesses for the next generation to thrive.

  • Energy: It’s so much easier to check out when you’re down reading or browsing. I contribute this to the feed format.

    • I subscribe only to my favorites to not miss their articles.

    • I follow people and brands I find interesting, but don’t want to subscribe to yet. This keeps my inbox uncluttered while still engaging.

    • I save articles to read later on my tablet.

For me, moving to Substack has been a breath of fresh air this spring with inspiration and creativity. My friend, Megan, is probably tired of me telling her about it and sharing posts. 😄
