There’s always a point at the end of summer when I start thinking about my autumn wardrobe, even if I’m not quite ready to let go of summer dressing. For me, this is the perfect time to start looking at those pieces that can work across both seasons - things you can wear now, but that will still feel relevant once September arrives.
A great pair of leather loafers is always high on my list. I love how they can make a simple summer dress feel a little more polished, but work just as well with denim, trousers and tailoring when the weather starts to cool. The same goes for a leather jacket - one of those pieces I find myself reaching for year after year. Thrown over a dress now or layered with knitwear later, it’s an easy way to transition an outfit without feeling too autumnal.
A good trench is another non-negotiable. It’s perfect for those cooler mornings and warmer afternoons, and instantly makes an outfit feel more pulled together. I’m also looking for lightweight knits and cardigans that can be layered over summer pieces now and properly worn once autumn arrives.
For me, transitional dressing is really about choosing pieces that can carry you through the change of season. Rather than completely replacing your wardrobe, it’s about adding a few well-chosen staples that make what you already own feel new again.
LOAFERS & BALLET FLATS
Loafers and ballet flats are firmly on my wishlist for autumn. I’ve been particularly drawn to Le Monde Béryl - their shoes are incredibly comfortable, beautifully made and so easy to wear with everything from dresses to denim. A perfect way to ease into September dressing without going full autumn just yet.
Additionally, if I were to buy a single pair of knee-high boots this season that are comfortable enough for all-day wear yet stylish and dressy enough for dinner or a night out, it would be this pair.
THE HIGH STREET EDIT
Lately, I’ve been looking around the high street for pieces that feel right for this in-between period. From easy layers to polished accessories, these are the finds I think are worth looking at now - and will work just as well once September rolls around.
THE LUXURY EDIT
For those looking to invest, I’ve also rounded up some of the more elevated pieces catching my eye. These are the kind of wardrobe staples where quality and longevity really come into play - classic silhouettes that you can return to season after season. I’ve spotted so many good leather jackets this season too!
The best transitional pieces aren’t necessarily the ones that scream autumn. They’re the ones that quietly bridge the gap - a good leather jacket, a classic trench, a pair of loafers or a lightweight knit that can be styled in multiple ways as the weather changes.
I hope you enjoyed this edit, I’d love to know your go-to transitional piece in the comments below.
See you on Sunday!
Love, Erna x
