Heed What Calls to You

Picture yourself standing in the center of Times Square in New York City on a Saturday night. The sidewalks are thronged with thousands of bustling people. Cars are honking, music is blaring, lights are flashing. The whole scene is pulsing with raw energy.

Now, imagine someone twenty feet away whispering your name. Would you hear it?

This time, picture yourself standing alone in the middle of a large field in the early dawn. Everything is perfectly quiet and still; the world has not yet awakened. No creatures stirring, no insects buzzing, not even a breeze kissing the tall grass. All is silent.

Imagine someone is again whispering your name. You’d hear it, clear as day. Right?

I believe the divine—God, the Universe, Life, however you choose to label it—is calling to us all the time, echoing across space and time. It wants to share messages and visions with you, custom designed for your growth and development.

Sadly, our busy lives often drown out these whispers of inspiration. We fail to carve out quiet time for pondering and self-reflection. We become distracted by the noise of world events, political drama, entertainment, and social media—and altogether miss the subtle callings to our souls.

The Voice

I sometimes refer to this kind, familiar inner wisdom as the Voice of my Higher Self. The Voice always wants what is best for me, is always gentle and encouraging, and always has my back. The same goes for you, too.

Often, the messages from our Higher Self show up in our imagination. Albert Einstein said, “Imagination is everything. It is the preview to life’s coming attractions.”

A word of caution, though. Be careful of who you share your visions with. What called to you didn’t call to them. No one else can hear what is only meant for you.

Millions of dreams have been squashed by the good intentions of family, friends, teachers, and colleagues who worried for our safety. They didn’t want to see us crushed or hurt. But to paraphrase comedian Steve Harvey, “God didn’t put it in their imagination, He put it in yours.” Just like a small ember needs to be shielded from the howling wind, your sparks of inspiration need to be protected if you are to have any hope of fanning them into a bonfire of creation, and turning your dreams into reality.

Never forget this: We only have one brief period of time on Earth, and you are allowed to live your life however you choose, without explanation or justification. This is your “one wild and precious life,” not theirs. Yours. They can choose for themselves.

The vision for your life is yours, and yours alone. Listen for it. Heed it. Protect it.
