August is your advantage

The NFL preseason just kicked off.

Nobody will remember a single score from these games, because the ones that count are still weeks away. But smart teams know this is the window that will decide their season. Decisions made in August dictate the outcomes of games that happen in October and November.

Business runs on a similar calendar. It just pretends it doesn’t.

August is the month that feels like nothing. Inboxes slow down, half the people you need are out on vacation, and it seems like anyone who’s still in the office is just coasting until everyone else gets back.

Then September arrives, and teams are scrambling to sharpen the message, fix the deck, and align on positioning during the exact weeks they’re supposed to be executing, not strategizing.

That’s the schedule most companies run every year. It’s also why so many fall launches get held up by a positioning debate that should have been resolved in the summer.

Here’s a different perspective worth considering: August isn’t the off-season, it’s the pre-season.

This quiet period isn’t a lull you have to endure; it’s the one time of year where you actually have enough breathing room to tackle the work that never seems to survive your busy weeks.

Pre-season work focuses on preparation, not publishing.

The positioning conversation there’s never time for. The messaging cleanup you’ve been putting off since spring. The handful of decisions that will make fall execution faster because they’re already settled before the pressure of a looming deadline arrives.

None of it is visible to people on the outside, but it will show up later in speed, alignment, and efficiency.

There’s a reason this work is perfectly suited for the window that we’re in right now. It’s important but never urgent, and from September to December, urgent wins every time.

Think about what Q4 asks of a brand. Product launches, seasonal campaigns, annual planning cycles. Everyone needs to row in the same direction, all at once, and during the loudest stretch of the year.

Brands that are still trying to get their story straight inside that noise end up doing it reactively, in the slim margins that still exist around their other work, and under tight deadlines.

Those are not the conditions for doing your best work.

If you only take one thing away from this note, make it this:

The brands that look most composed in October got there because they had their most difficult conversations back in August while everyone else was coasting.

The quiet stretch is already half spent. The preparation window is small, and closing fast.

You don’t need a big initiative to improve your situation. Pick one conversation your team keeps postponing because things are busy and get it on the calendar.

No excuses. Things aren’t busy right now. That’s the whole point.

And if you want help deciding what your pre-season should focus on, just hit reply.

More soon,

José

P.S. – This week’s premium issue makes this concept more practical. I’m giving subscribers a full readiness audit they can use to get their brand’s foundations set before the busy season arrives. Four checks, completed in one focused afternoon, to set up a fourth quarter that’s focused on execution, not planning.

If that sounds valuable, I’d like to invite you to upgrade to a premium subscription using the link below.
