Imagine a future where solar energy isn’t limited by weather or daylight—where power is harvested directly from space and beamed down to Earth. Japan is on the verge of making this vision a reality with its OHISAMA project, an ambitious initiative designed to transmit solar power from space for the first time.
Unlike traditional solar farms, which rely on sunlight reaching the ground, Japan’s space-based solar station will collect energy in orbit using a 22-square-foot solar panel.
According to Japan Space Systems, the satellite will convert sunlight into microwaves, which will then be transmitted to Earth via strategically placed antennas. This method ensures continuous energy collection, unaffected by nighttime or cloud cover.
The initial test will transmit just 1 kilowatt of power, enough to run a small household appliance. However, Japan has been refining this technology for years. In previous experiments, researchers successfully wirelessly transmitted 10 kilowatts over 500 meters, proving that large-scale applications are within reach.
Japan’s long-term vision includes full-scale orbital solar farms, which could provide clean, limitless energy for communities worldwide.
Experts believe this breakthrough could revolutionize global energy production, offering a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels.
While this initial phase won’t be powering cities just yet, Japan’s OHISAMA project is a historic first step toward a future where clean energy is limitless.
