There's a massive gap opening up in fashion materials, and it's going to cost some brands dearly.
Consumers are rejecting polyester. "Why does my activewear feel like plastic?" videos have millions of views on TikTok. In Europe, you can find better alternatives. In the US, good luck.
Meanwhile, the science is ready. I track dozens of companies with actual production capacity: Ambercycle and Syre doing textile-to-textile recycling at commercial scale, Modern Synthesis and MycoWorks growing materials in labs, Spinnova turning wood pulp into fiber without the usual chemical cocktail. These aren't prototypes—they're building factories.
The problem? Brands with the most resources to scale this stuff are moving the slowest.
Materials drive 91% of fashion's carbon footprint through extraction, processing, and production (BCG/Fashion for Good, 2025). EU regulations are tightening. Supply chains keep breaking. Conventional fiber prices are volatile and trending up.
Next-gen materials could fix this, but there's a supply crunch coming. The same BCG research projects demand will outstrip supply by 2030. Early adopters will lock in access and better pricing. Everyone else will scramble for what's left at premium prices.
Here's what most brands miss: big brands moving now isn't just risk reduction—it's getting better economics. Small companies pay premiums because their volumes are tiny. But brands with real scale can lock in supply relationships and pricing before this becomes mainstream and competitive.

Design-focused brands like Stella McCartney and GANNI turned testing into actual programs. They're making materials innovation part of their brand DNA and continuing to grow a following.
The big luxury houses and US giants have the budgets to make this mainstream. They just need to move before the cost advantage disappears.
This isn't about invention anymore—it's about adoption. Solar panels and electric vehicles followed the same pattern: create real demand, improve quality at scale, invest in the winners until prices reach parity. Fashion can do the same.
Pick one product and stick with it. Choose a core style you run every season—basic tee, jean, legging. Replace 20-30% of the fabric with a next-gen alternative and commit to running it for at least three seasons. Suppliers need consistent volume to justify scaling up production.
Educate without the jargon. Most people have never heard "textile-to-textile recycling." This is awareness building for a community that's never encountered these terms.
Start with the easy swaps. Labels, linings, hang tags, packaging. Switch these to bio-based or recycled options now. It builds internal momentum and cuts waste immediately while you work on the harder stuff.
By 2030, next-gen and conventional materials will coexist in every category. Brands that help build the supply chain now will have first access and better economics. Those that wait will pay more for less choice.
