notes for the weekend: disclosure day

Probably my favorite thing about Steven Spielberg’s new film, “Disclosure Day” is that it is unapologetically strange. The story isn’t a neat-and-tidy Hollywood plot that even the best films being made today seem to have to squeeze inside. It’s a sprawling, weird, and I think pretty brave film.

Above all, it’s classic Spielberg. I almost forgot movies could conjure up some of the things Spielberg’s magic always sprinkles into them: a sense of child-like wonder, that dream-like “anything can happen” feeling, the insistence that we never forget what it’s like to wonder about the world around us. The purity Spielberg brings to the screen is so dear.

Because Spielberg helped create the “Hollywood Blockbuster”, this film feels like the classic Hollywood Blockbusters of the 80’s and 90’s without at all feeling contrived. Spielberg came up with these techniques. So while it makes me feel nostalgic, it’s just old hat for him.

And Emily Blunt? Sensational. What a crazy role.

If you’re saying, “I feel like you’re not actually talking about the film itself,” you’re right. You just have to get in the seat, buckle up, and see what happens.
