A Delta Air Lines Boeing 757-200 was forced back to Atlanta after its crew reported fumes on the flight deck minutes into the climb.
Flight DL-2204 to Orlando had reached around 9,000 feet when the crew levelled off, declared an emergency and turned back. The aircraft landed on runway 09R roughly 17 minutes after departing runway 09L, then vacated, crossed the departure runway and stopped clear of both. Rather than wait for a tow to a gate, the crew evacuated using the escape slides on the taxiway. Buses collected the 199 passengers and six crew, and Delta placed a replacement aircraft on the Orlando service.
Fume events are treated seriously because contaminated bleed air can degrade crew performance without any obvious warning. The standard response is masks on and a return to the nearest suitable airport.
The airframe involved, N555NW, is one of Delta’s older 757s. Built at Renton and first flown in April 2002, it went to Northwest Airlines new and passed to Delta with the 2008 merger, gaining winglets that November. Its 199 seat cabin means this flight was operating completely full.
