This show was delightful! Whimsical and wistful and filled with unexpected moments. It centers on a mysterious and prestigious Emporium store everyone wants to work at. This is an incomplete work by Thorton Wilder, adapted and completed by Kirk Lynn. This show breaks the 4th wall and brings the adaptation process into the show in a really satisfying way. Even when I saw it early in previews the cast was excellent, taking on many different roles. I also really loved the way this show was staged. I’d highly recommend it. Read more

The voices were incredible, the songs were awesome, I loved the story and learning about that part of the history, as it’s a true story, a few really really strong actors, nice set, and amazing how so many actors play so many roles so fluidly and clearly in such a tight space. This play would be amazing in a bigger space. Loved the second half the most but it’s a long musical - so be in the mood for it - very Hamilton ish vibes. Some actors were not always loud enough or clear enough (accents challenging at times) but overall it was probably one of the best productions I have seen at 59E59. Major shoutout to Isaac Gryn, Preeya Kalidas and Jez Unwin. Honestly every single person on this cast was terrific! Job well done! Read more

The Balusters is one of those shows that probably won’t dominate the headlines, but absolutely delivers a very solid two hours of theater. If you caught Eureka Day last season on Broadway, you’ll recognize the same plat structure and the same brand of uncomfortable laughter that hits perhaps a little too close to home. The play centers on a neighborhood committee of well-meaning, deeply flawed do-gooders. Chaos ensues over stop signs and racism, bias, and just about every other “-ism” imaginable. Watching each character slowly realize they are, in fact, part of the problem is both the joke and the point. The ensemble is strong overall, though there are moments where the timing is off, feeling more like delivering lines than being in the moment of emotion. There’s also some direct symbolism. Bring your high school class, they’ll ace the post-show discussion. That said, the set adds smart, intentional details (keep an eye on the artwork), scene transitions are fluid, and the music choices are genuinely spot-on. It may not be groundbreaking, but this show is sharp, self-aware, and very validating for all of us who know the pain of the neighborhood facebook groups and community meetings. Read more

What an astounding piece of theatre. Each performance was incredibly evocative and brought with it a level of playfulness and nuance that had me gripped till the end. Outside of every single performance being amazing I really wanna shout out Kara Young who has never once given a lukewarm performance. Probably one of my favorite actresses on Broadway right now. The set was beautiful and the way the outlines functioned with the music really got me into a specific mood that connected me with the piece as well. Read more

This was campy, silly, fun. I laughed, but not quite as hard as the people next to me. Watching rich people get drunk and unravel is a Broadway staple that can easily become insufferable, but Kelli O’Hara and Rose Byrne steer the chaos with a loveable charm. The physical comedy is a standout for sure. Surprisingly, I feel in love with the design. The set is detailed, but the lighting in particular deserves a moment as it somehow captures that post-rain, early-evening glow. I found myself looking out the window on stage. Maybe it stands out because the show itself doesn’t aim to overwhelm. At the end of the day, Fallen Angels is 90 minutes of stylish, slightly tipsy, classic (yes, very bougie, white) Broadway escapism. Read more

This is a relentlessly dark, depressing, and bleak play, despite intermittent comic relief. Unfortunately, the show’s scenes and monologues are pretty interminable, and we all said we were phasing in and out without ever really missing a beat. That being said, the play is relevant and the actors are game, even if their performances are uneven. (As always, I tend not to like Scott Elliott’s direction.) The best part of the show is its physical production elements — the set, lighting, and sound design is probably the best I’ve seen in this venue. Read more
