A blonde man wearing a headband and dressed all in white stands between two humanoid aliens that tower over him. Peering outward in profile, the alien man and woman both have angular faces, pure black skin, and ears that slope back to points. Their hair falls in braided ponytails on black leather. They present as militaristic, but from the way the human casually grasps the strap of his shoulder bag, the aiens seem more like bodyguards than captors. An assault rifle is slung over the back of the male, while the female holds a laser pistol low at her side. In the pink and peach gradient sky overhead, a insectile spacecraft hovers.

Two hundred years ago, a spaceship dropped out of hyperspace at the wrong destination. The human colonists find the planet below inhabited by a race advanced only to the level of steam-engine technology.

Costuming on the central figure differs. He wears no headband here and his jacket is pulled tight with the broad, tall lapels rendered plainly with the hint the shirt design beneath being futuristic fashion.
Preliminary concept for FOREIGNER

The strength of the story by C.J. Cherryh is the contrast of alien psychology and culture as seen through the eyes of the one human who fluently speaks their language.

The author translates detailed research into immersive realism, showcasing a depth of worldbuilding rarely seen. That’s why she has earned comparisons to legends like J.R.R. Tolkien and Gene Wolfe.

Alternative concept for FOREIGNER

Foreigner is a novel of first contact by C.J. Cherryh, the first of four covers I illustrated for a series that currently stands at 22 books, written over a span of 30 years. Quite an achievement!
