The Architect's Drafting Table · The Architect's Drafting Table

You don’t need to perform vulnerability. You need to inspect your foundation.

I read an article in Psychology Today recently that almost made me throw my phone across the room. It said, “Authenticity is a playground for narcissists.”

At first, I was offended. I was like, “Excuse me? We work hard to bring our whole selves to these rooms!” But then, I sat with my cup of tea, I unquenched my jaw, and I realized... they aren’t wrong.

Because I look around at us, brilliant Black women leading in these corporate streets, and I see us trying to do “Authenticity” without a blueprint. And sugar, it is tearing us apart.

In this episode, we’re talking about the difference between being authentic and just being messy. We’re looking at the architecture of trust and why your “armor” might be the only thing keeping you from the legacy you actually want.

We’re dismantling the two most common architectural flaws in our leadership styles:

  1. Simone (The Savior): She is the “Strong Friend.” She has all the Soul, but no Structure. She’s drowning because she thinks holding everything together is her job. When she tries to be “authentic,” she leaks anxiety and over-shares because she doesn’t have a container for her own power.

  2. Vivian Lorraine (The Survivor): She is the “First, Only, Different.” She has all the Structure, but no Soul. She built armor so thick that she’s suffocating inside it. To her, vulnerability feels like a trap, so she performs a “safe” version of it that keeps everyone at a distance.

That part.

Both are failing at authenticity because their architecture is out of alignment. One is a Diner, trying to serve everyone until the kitchen burns down. The other is a Fortress, impenetrable, cold, and empty.

We don’t need more “vulnerability.” We need better architecture. In this episode, I break down the four pillars of C.A.R.E. Leadership:

  • C - Connect & Correct: You must connect with the human before you correct the work. But remember: Connection without correction is just enabling mediocrity.

  • A - Acknowledge & Accept: Acknowledge the human, but accept the data. Stop being a “martyr for the mundane” and accept that you cannot do the work of three people.

  • R - Review & Respect: Review the work against a high standard, but do it with respect for the person. Don’t crush the spirit to save the project.

  • E - Educate & Elevate: Educate your team so you aren’t the only expert. Elevate them so they can grow beyond you. This is how you stop being the bottleneck.

The concrete is curing, but the Architect must prepare for the build. Choose your exact next step:

IF YOU ARE IN A CAPACITY CRISIS: Like Simone, you cannot build on exhaustion. Before we can add new rooms, we have to clear the site of the toxic “Yes” habits that are flooding your foundation.

IF YOU ARE TRAPPED IN THE ARMOR: If you’re like Vivian and your “Expertise” has become a cage, it’s time for a structural retrofit. Stop getting paid for tactical labor when you deliver strategic value.

This is the brew of radical honesty. It’s warm, it’s bold, and it doesn’t need any sugar. Use this frequency to look in the mirror and ask: Am I building a home, or am I just building a better cage?
