OpenAI announced Astra, its next major model family, not with a product launch but by publishing verified solutions to 10 previously unsolved problems across mathematics and theoretical computer science.

🧮 Astra solved problems across 8 fields including, high-dimensional geometry, coding theory, group theory, quantum complexity, lattice cryptography, and extremal combinatorics, each unsolved for 10+ years
🔓 The headline result is the first-ever construction of a non-sofic group, resolving a central question in group theory open since Mikhail Gromov introduced soficity in 1999
📄 OpenAI published a 249-page manuscript plus machine-checkable Lean 4 proofs on GitHub with zero unverified steps, so the math community can independently confirm every result
💰 Total compute cost: roughly $2,000 at Sol API rates, showing these breakthroughs required a fraction of what frontier training runs cost
