A question regarding soundstage.

I have noticed a correlation between "room decoupling" of the loudspeakers and a greater degree of spatial information being transmitted successfully to the listener. Meaning that I believe that a greater degree of controlled room interactions lends a greater degree of spaciousness to the reproduction by freeing it from the listening room. For example, think of dipole speakers and how they promote cancellations at their sides or speakers with extremely controlled directivity. I'm not saying this is the only way to create a believable soundstage however. I would like your expert opinions on the matter as reviewers who have experienced the performance in this metric of many different design philosophies. Is there a "best way", in your experience, to evoke spacial perception via the power response? And if so, is it what I described above or something else entirely?
