Emerson Prentice · The 44 North

Dear readers (and now listeners!),

My name is Emerson Prentice. I’m a contributing political writer for The 44 North and now the host of our new podcast, North of the Headline.

This podcast emerged in part from a deep love and desire for communication through voice memos. When the distance between friends feels far, or a story from my life feels too confusing to fit in a text box, I opt to talk into my phone and explain it in real time. Audio and speech are ways we convey the complexity of our stories—that’s why the voice memo is so desirable and why an audio-based podcast format has the potential to expand the nuance of a news article. Using our voices allows us to infuse tone, pitch, speed, and so much more into the written word.

And so:

North of the Headline is a new conversation series from The 44 North that goes beyond the article to talk with writers about the deeper ideas and questions behind their work. This is our very first episode. I hope you enjoy it!

Contributing Writer, Politics + Creator & Host of “North of Headline”

The 44 North publishes youth perspectives to encourage thoughtful engagement with complex social, political, historical, and cultural issues. The following conversation reflects the views and analysis of the speakers. As with all work that includes opinion, this conversation has been edited for clarity and reviewed for factual accuracy, but the interpretations and arguments are the speaker’s own.

“I think people globally can often be surprised because of this reputation we have globally as being a nice country.”

In the first episode of North of the Headline, host and contributing political writer for The 44 North Emerson Prentice sits down with opinions and political writer Sylphia Basak. Together, they discuss the subtle military-industrial complex in Canada, Canada’s reputation as a “nice country,” and the complexities of government transparency.

This episode was hosted and produced by Emerson Prentice with support from Mikaela Brewer and Gillian Smith-Clark. The theme music is from Nesterouk.

You can read Sylphia’s opinion piece on Canada’s military industrial complex at The 44 North here.
