Reckoning reinforced my love of process by slowing me down and allowing me to meander more in my creative work. I’ve been in a hurry for so long that a slower pace is unfamiliar but very welcome. Finished objects happen in their own time.
The sewing meditation ‘A Devotion’ came from something Karen said and was written on a post-it on my computer during my first Reckoning. I decided to stitch a more permanent reminder that all daily practice is a devotion.

Over the last few seasons, the work of "reckoning" has evolved into a broader ecosystem of self-affirming practices: continuing to reframe writing and art-making as devotional work, and returning to non-profit arts management as a midwife for organizations at the threshold of change. Post-Reckoning, I cultivate alignment, both internally and externally. As I balance motherhood with creative and non-profit work, I look to my intuition for what tools hold the greatest ease and resonance. Lately, tarot and collage have been simple, yet powerful mediums to dip into when I am looking for creative connection. Even a short amount of time to be messy or to tap into my subconscious feels like a major reset, providing clarity for the rest of the day. - JK, July 2026

Shayna Connelly is a filmmaker based in Chicago whose work explores hauntings, liminality and the boundaries between documentary, experimental and fiction filmmaking. She holds an MFA in screenwriting and directing from Columbia College Chicago and is an Associate Professor of Film and Television at DePaul University. Connelly is a process focused teacher applying techniques from directing to other areas of filmmaking including editing, writing and film production.
- Jen Kwok is a writer and performer who was born in “the Valley,” raised in the Mojave Desert, and currently based in NY’s Hudson Valley. She specializes in using her unique perspective as a Chinese American woman to create songs with humor and heart. Her resume includes writing songs for “Sesame Street,” acting in Netflix’s “Friends from College,” and performing at the Kennedy Center.
