Some people find their way into voice acting through formal auditions, elaborate plans, or carefully mapped career paths.
Others are pulled through the door by friends, curiosity, and the quiet realization that the thing they have loved since childhood might still be waiting for them.
In this episode of Vicious Ink, I’m joined by voice actor Alice, better known online as @alice.theva, for a conversation about theatre, performance, dark academia, and what happens when a lifelong love of acting finally finds a new medium.
Alice and I both share a love for fun and spicy conversation, which meant there was no shortage of places for this conversation to wander. We talked about the friends in the listener community who encouraged her into the voice acting world, the theatre experiences that helped shape her instincts, and the childhood desire to perform that never truly loosened its grip.
Because voice acting strips performance down to breath, pacing, rhythm, and sound, every small choice matters.
A pause can become hesitation.
A whisper can become a threat.
One subtle shift in tone can turn a line from comforting to dangerous without changing a single word.
We explored how performers build characters when the audience cannot see their faces or body language, and how a voice actor can still create a complete emotional world in the listener’s imagination. Alice also shares what has surprised her about the industry, what she loves about the work, and the types of roles she hopes to explore as her career continues to grow.
Naturally, we also stepped into darker territory.
Alice is a fan of Keri Lake’s Nocticadia, a book steeped in dark academia, gothic tension, mystery, obsession, and a setting that feels almost alive beneath the characters’ feet.
That opened the door to a larger conversation about atmosphere and why certain stories become so immersive. Dark academia has a particular kind of hunger to it. It gives us forbidden rooms, dangerous knowledge, intellectual obsession, old buildings full of secrets, and characters who are often far too curious for their own good.
It is also a world built for voice.
The tension lives in what is almost said. The seduction lives in restraint. The danger often arrives quietly, with perfect diction and a tone that tells you the speaker already knows how this story ends.
Alice brings warmth, curiosity, theatrical instinct, and a genuine love of storytelling to her work. This episode is an introduction not only to where she has been, but to all the places her voice may carry her next.
