Most leaders I work with want their culture to be different. They want it to be better, more nimble, more strategic, more innovative. Whatever you want to change in your organization, by and large you must first look to what you reward, punish, and tolerate. You want people to be more strategic? Start rewarding that behavior and stop hiring, developing, and promoting based on the tactical. You want more push back and debate? Stop punishing pushback and start rewarding it.
The problem is, most leaders really don’t want to do this. The tactical HR leaders doesn’t really want her people to be strategic business partners because her organization is designed to fulfil the wishes of operational leaders. The operational leader doesn’t really want pushback because he doesn’t want to deal with having to debate and explain himself.
Every lie in your organization holds something up or protects something. Dig deep enough and you’ll see why leaders say they want something but won’t actually do the things to get it. That is the corporate Lie Economy.
