The unsung summer wardrobe hero...

Before Miuccia Prada started making her own clothing she only wore vintage. She couldn’t find anything on the market she liked.

When Miuccia finally decided to make clothes she set out to make clothes to please women instead of making women’s clothes designed to please men- a simple but radical concept at the time in an industry dominated by men, especially in Italy.

Miuccia Prada designed clothes for the strength of women. She was interested in design first before the physique. She wanted to expand the concept of what beauty and sexiness could look like in fashion.

She made clothes that were simple, smart, and made to support women in all their complexities. That is why I find it especially interesting that Miuccia herself was particularly partial to a good skirt.

Any photo you see of Miuccia herself she will most likely be wearing a skirt- sometimes styled back to a beautiful knit, a crisp white shirt, and other times a great leather jacket.

In a podcast series brilliantly produced by Vogue called “The 1990s,” they interview Miuccia. While she doesn’t explain her fascination with skirts she does explain her challenge with dresses “It’s difficult to express complexities in one piece.” That’s why I like dressing in pieces.”

On hot 90 degree days there’s nothing I want to throw on more than a skirt and a simple tee or tank. I love that you still get all the joy of the swish that comes with wearing a good dress but none of the fussiness.

You can create the tension I always crave in a good outfit with a skirt in a way dresses cannot. While I always pack a dress on any summer trip, it’s my skirt that I always find myself reaching for.

A good skirt is quite possibly the most handy piece in any summer wardrobe. It’s the unsung summer wardrobe hero. And it is a major gap in my own wardrobe.
