The magic of the Vigeland Sculptue Park in Oslo, Norway

The Viking Age never ends in my house. Next month I’m headed back to viking country for a conference in Oslo, Norway, and then to my husband’s family’s old stomping grounds in Stavanger where I’ll finally get to see the three swords monumental sculpture. I’ll also head to Sweden to be on a viking-themed podcast and then on to see so many of the sites that I’ve taught about for years but have not been to yet such as Birka, Uppsala, and possibly a side trip to Gotland, where I’ll see my friend Octavia who was on our Vikingology Podcast talking about all the cool viking history there, like more silver hoards buried in the ground from the Viking Age than anywhere else in Scandinavia. Markfru, maybe I’ll get ahold of a silver coin for you!

In Oslo I am headed to the prestigious Viking Congress, an academic viking nerd fest held only once every four years. This will be my first time there. I’ll get to meet colleagues finally, some of whom I’ve known for years but have never seen in person thanks to this odd digital world we all inhabit now. I’m so looking forward to that.

I’m also looking forward to the behind-the-scenes tour we will get of the famous Viking Ship Museum in Oslo. I’ve been before years ago, but they are currently closed undergoing a years-long renovation, reopening to the public in 2027. For those of you into the vikings like I am, you’ll instantly recognize the Oseberg ship, which is in the museum. It is a ship burial (no, not the burning ship kind) that is the most extravagant ever found in all of Scandinavia.

Stay tuned as I visit and re-visit sites old and new because, as any good historian, if I experience it I gotta write about it 😊 It’s gonna be an adventure, viking style. See you on the trail.

Skál!
