Why I’ve been lying (and what it means for my brand)

Teresa Crifo · Designing Clarity

Hi, I’m Teresa. And I’ve been lying.
Not intentionally. Not maliciously.
But by trying to fit into a visual version of a brand that just isn’t me.

This is something I know many of you are feeling too: the discomfort of outgrowing your own branding or feeling like you have to be someone else.

In this article, I’m unpacking the shift I’ve been sitting with and why your visuals might be sending the wrong message (even when your strategy is solid).

Inside, you’ll get:
✷ A behind-the-scenes look at my own brand identity wobble
✷ The difference between “on-trend” and “true-to-you”
✷ Why your visuals might be working
against your message
✷ The exact process I’m following to realign with more ease

Let’s dive in…

For a while now, I’ve felt a quiet twinge that something about the visual appearance of my brand is off.

If I’m totally honest I’ve had these thoughts for a long time but didn’t want to admit it to myself because it’s work to change it.

If you’ve been following this series, you already know lately I’ve been deep in my evolution. Refining offers, rewriting messaging, tweaking my site… and then refining my messaging again.

And yes, it’s feeling better.

But then came the subtle nudge.
The part of me that knew: this still isn’t it.

The reminder that I have been feeling for a while that the visuals are not 100% me.

At first, I ignored it.
Told myself I was overthinking.
I was procrastinating.
But the feeling got louder.

Eventually, I had to admit it:
I’d built a brand that looked more like the online version of who I
thought I needed to be.

Trendy.
Polished.
Boss babe type vibe.

But the truth?
I’m not that girl.

I’m a 40-something (we’re not discussing the exact number!) mum who lives in casual clothing or even active wear (so I stay motivated to move!).

I’m not a city girl.
I’m a nature-loving, coffee-sipping girl who lives in a regional town.
I prefer country over city.
I work from a cosy desk at home, not a luxe office.
I love to walk in nature by the lake, not sit in a café with my Macbook (but don’t get me wrong I love to sit in a cafe catching up with friends or clients over a good coffee!).

The impression I’ve been giving is not me.

I love my logo but the rest of my brand visuals don’t feel like me anymore.

Your visuals aren’t just design, they’re perception.
They’re how people
feel you before they ever read a word.

And right now, mine are sending the wrong signal.

If people can’t feel you when they land on your website or scroll your feed…
you’ve lost them before they ever get to your brilliance.

I’ve spent years building brands for others that feel like them.
Now it’s time I do the same for myself.

It’s that classic truth:
Chefs don’t cook for themselves.
Designers leave their own brands until last.

Well… not anymore.

I’m not rushing.
I’m letting this next version of me arrive gently and intuitively.

This is something I’ve come to trust through Human Design.

Here’s the process I’m following:

Tuning into my environment
Coincidently I’ve been updating spaces in my home and while I’m doing that I’m paying attention to the colours, textures and moods that feel most like me. I feel like my style and taste is changing.

Collecting inspiration
I’ve started a desktop folder for fonts, packaging, interiors, branding, photography and anything that grabs my gut.

I’ll be creating a moodboard
This will help me connect the dots and reflect back the truth of how I want to show up visually.

Collaborate with my photographer
My trusted photographer is waiting for the green light. When my excitement hits and I know ‘it’s time’ I’ll give her the go ahead. I’ll share the inspo and we’ll co-create visuals that are true to me, not just trending.

I’ll rebuild the visual story
Once I have those images I’ll update my website and social presence to match this new frequency. I know the images will peak my excitement and inspiration to go all in and make the updates.

This is going to be a new era for my brand. I’m stepping into my individuality. You might relate to this, but I’m done trying to look like everyone else.

If your visuals feel even slightly off, listen to that.

It’s not fluff.
It’s not a sign to burn everything down.
It’s a quiet invitation to align… again.

You don’t need to look like the industry.
You need to look like you.

Give yourself the space to become.
The clarity will come when you give it room to drop in.

I’m still in the in-between.
Still tweaking. Still tuning in. Still holding space for the next evolution.

This part?
It’s uncomfortable.
But it’s also where the gold is.

Every time I’ve listened to the nudge and rebuilt from truth it’s paid off.
In clarity.
In conversions.
In connection.

And that’s what I want for you too.

If you’re in this phase?
I see you.
Stay with it.

Your brand is evolving.

If you're craving a visual identity that finally feels like you and you're tired of looking like everyone else, lets chat.
