I Started a New Business And It Exposed What Most Women Are Missing

I started a completely different business recently.

Not another service.
Not another offer inside my existing business.

My husband and I started a hot, fresh donut van!

Sounds random I know!!

But it was a gut decision. One of those moments where you just know it’s right and you move before you’ve overthought it.

And what happened next confirmed something I’ve been saying for years…

Business isn’t actually that complicated when the foundations are right.

When we decided to go ahead, I expected a slow start.

A learning curve, time to build awareness and a gradual build.

But that’s not what happened.

Momentum came quickly.

Before I knew it, we were standing at our first event with lines of people waiting up to 45 minutes… all day.

And I remember standing there thinking:

This shouldn’t have worked this fast… but it did.

Not because it was “easy.”
But because the fundamentals were right from the beginning.

The product was clear, positioning was obvious, systems were in place and the visibility was immediate.

And in that moment, something clicked.

I didn’t realise how many women are making business harder than it needs to be… until I stepped into one where it wasn’t hard at all.

Thanks for reading Designing Clarity! This post is public so feel free to share it.

As we set up this business, things became obvious very quickly.

Not in a “lesson learned” kind of way…
More in a “oh, this is why things work” kind of way.

I’m going to break them down for you here

Clarity + simplicity creates speed

The first thing I noticed was how powerful simplicity is.

We’re selling hot, fresh, allergy-friendly donuts coated in 12 unique sugars made from fruits and vegetables.

That’s it.

No complicated offer stack, confusion or overthinking.

The product is clear. The experience is clear. The messaging is clear.

And because of that, everything else becomes easier.

Marketing is obvious, decisions are faster and customers instantly understand what they’re buying.

It reminded me how often we complicate things unnecessarily.

Adding more offers. More layers. More noise.

When really, the power is in refining one thing that works and doing it exceptionally well.

Guidance collapses time

The second thing that stood out was how much guidance changes everything.

This business operates under a licence model, which meant we weren’t starting from scratch.

We had people ahead of us who had already tested, refined and learned what works.

And instead of guessing, we followed what had already been proven.

It removed so much friction and it made everything faster, cleaner and more certain.

It reinforced something I see all the time:

So many women try to figure everything out alone, when the right guidance could collapse years of trial and error.

Positioning drives demand

These aren’t just donuts.

They’re allergy-friendly (which fills a real need) and they’re coated in 12 unique sugars (which creates curiosity, conversation and experience).

People don’t just buy them. They talk about them.

They ask questions and they come back to try different flavours.

That’s what strong positioning does.

It creates demand before you even have to sell.

And it made me realise how many brands blend in, not because they’re not good… but because they’re not clearly positioned.

Perception shapes opportunity

Another moment that really hit me was around perception.

From the beginning, we made a decision: If we’re going to do this, we’re going to do it properly.

We didn’t start with a basic setup and instead we invested in a brand new vintage-style caravan.
We made it look professional. Polished. Considered.

And because of that, we were treated differently from day one.

We stood out, were trusted and we were invited into opportunities that wouldn’t normally be offered.

That reinforced something I’ve always known:

People respond to what they see (not what you know).

Momentum comes from visibility

Then came visibility.

I didn’t sit back and hope people would find us, I marketed HARD!

I posted in local groups, built excitement and ran a big giveaway. I created momentum before we even launched.

And it worked.

That first event didn’t succeed by accident. It succeeded because people knew we existed and they were excited about it.

Visibility isn’t optional at any level.

If people don’t see you, they don’t know you exist.

Systems create ease

We also set up systems early.

Because this is a sideline business, we needed it to run efficiently.

So I introduced pre-orders before events.

Which meant we were making sales before we even arrived.

It reduced pressure, improved customer experience and made everything smoother.

And again, it highlighted something I see constantly: So many women are manually grinding through things that could be simplified with the right systems.

People buy from people

And finally we have the human element.

The posts that perform best? The ones with us in them.

Not perfect graphics or polished visuals. Just us.

Because people connect with people.

Especially now, in a world where everything is becoming more automated and AI-driven, realness stands out.

By the time we moved through all of this, one thing was undeniable:

This business moved quickly… not because we worked harder but because the foundations were right.

So if your business feels slow…
If you’re overthinking everything…
If you’re working harder than your results reflect…

It’s not because business is hard.

It’s because something foundational isn’t clear, positioned, or aligned yet.

Business becomes heavy when it’s built on misalignment.
It becomes powerful when the foundations are right.

And once you see that…

You can’t unsee it.
