This month of August 2026 will be one to remember in the tennis world, as Roger Federer is about to be inducted into the Hall of Fame (Aug. 27-29). On this occasion, and after the series released last year for Maria Sharapova’s induction, the International Tennis Hall of Fame has produced a six-part documentary on Federer’s journey.
A tough ask for a career spanning decades of glory, but a challenge that Peabody and Emmy Award-winning director and producer Katie Walsh undertook nonetheless. With great success, she captured many details fans might have missed from the Federer lore and got the Swiss to shed light on some of the biggest moments of his career. Here Walsh shares what the experience was like from behind the camera. “Roger exceeded and lived up to my expectations at the same time,” she said.

For The Road to Newport Series, the ITHF has thrown the media equivalent of a red carpet to Roger Federer by putting this documentary in the hands of Katie Walsh, the award-winning director praised for the Simone Biles Rising documentary on Netflix in 2024. Talk about having GOAT experience! I was curious to learn what it was like for her to work with Roger Federer on a very special occasion that will be part of his tennis legacy, so I’m very glad she agreed to talk about it.
Carole Bouchard, The Tennis Sweet Spot: What were you aiming for when you started this series about and with Roger Federer?
Katie Walsh: This is all part of his induction into the Hall of Fame, so it’s just a natural time to honor him and his career and take a moment to look back at some of the points in his career that really had the most impact on him. That was part of the conversation when deciding what the stories to tell would be, while talking with him and his team about what those moments that stood out to him were. It’s just a great opportunity to look back at some of those moments that made him a great champion, and, you know, well beyond just a worthy induction into the Hall of Fame… Like the worthiest! (she laughs)
