Dream Dump with Phoebe Robinson

It’s Tuesday, my favorite day of the week!

This week I had the absolute pleasure of talking with Phoebe Robinson. Phoebe is a stand-up comedian, writer, producer, and actress. She co-created and co-starred in the podcast-turned-HBO series 2 Dope Queens, hosted the critically acclaimed podcasts So Many White Guys and Black Frasier, has published three books, and now has her own imprint, Tiny Reparations Books. You might also know her from films like Ibiza and What Men Want. Her latest stand-up special, I Don’t Wanna Work Anymore, absolutely killed me, and she’s heading out on her Feral and Fired Up tour this fall. If you haven’t read her books yet, I’d start with You Can’t Touch My Hair and Other Things I Still Have to Explain.

I was such a fan of 2 Dope Queens. It really informed an entire year of my life. When I first met Sofia, we bonded immediately over how much we loved the podcast. In fact, I think 2 Dope Queens is what made me love podcasts in the first place.

Phoebe and Jessica were at a couple of the same festivals we played over the years, so we met in person a handful of times, including at Bonnaroo, where we invited them onstage to sing “Closer” with us. In 2017 we ran into Phoebe at Boston Calling and snapped this cute shot.

And in 2019, Phoebe was the moderator for one of our High School Book events.

SHE IS LITERALLY THE BEST.

Over the years we’ve stayed in touch. Phoebe gave me incredible advice when Sara and I were in New York pitching High School to publishers. Since she’d already written an amazing book and we shared the same literary agent, she was my first call when things started getting serious.

Most recently, she came out to support me in New York for the premiere of Fanatical. Get yourself a friend who shows up for your scary, sad documentary about being stalked and impersonated online.

I loved having Phoebe on Dream Dump to talk about dreams, sleep, creativity, and life. Like so many great comedians, writers, and actors, she has incredible depth. She can be outrageously funny one minute and deeply thoughtful the next. Her love of U2, however, may be the most serious thing about her.
