In case you didn’t already know, in addition to this newsletter, I also run LegalQuants, which is a network of lawyers build their own tools to transform how law is practised and create new markets.
Legal quants are basically the combination of a lawyer + engineer + rainmaker in one person. I’d say they represent the most skilled ‘special ops’ class of lawyers who actively practise law, own client relations, dominate their knowledge field, and build software to encode their legal skills and judgment ahead of competitors. No one knows legal workflows better than the lawyer themselves who are serving clients on the frontline.

At LegalQuants, we run something called the LQ Residency. This is a 4 week sprint where each lawyer is paired up with a senior LQ mentor to build a product together. A bespoke product that the lawyer wished they had for a long time but couldn’t find the right vendor nor know how to build it until they got paired up with LQ who has the patience and domain expertise to teach them how.
Our latest sprint was in July, enrolled by 15 senior lawyers including partners from Wilkie Farr, DWF, the CLO of a US healthcare company, and boutique and in-house lawyers across four continents. At the start of the programme, most of them only knew basic prompting and never worked inside a terminal before, let alone build a product.
Yet four weeks later, every one of them demoed something (a platform, tool or skill) only they could have built. And these are working AI systems that carry their judgment, their practice, their decades of expertise.
The intensive “build-on-the-go” format meant that our lawyers not only picked up AI skills, but develop real muscle memory and a rewired mindset on how to approach legal problems like an LQ.
