Issue 52 - Week of 20th July 2026

If the newsletter is truncated you can click on "View entire message" to see the entire post in your email app.

Forty-two roles this week, and it’s a proper mixed bag. A trekking guide role in the Himalayas stopped us in our tracks, sitting alongside roles closer to home: estate gardening in Somerset, woodland officer roles across Scotland and Wales, and a run of retail and brand jobs at Vivobarefoot, Rapha, Castore and Cotswold Outdoor. Whether you’re after national park work closer to home or something further afield, this issue has both ends covered.

In case you missed it, The Salary Map went live last week. Thank you to everyone who’s already been in touch with thoughts and feedback. If you haven’t had a look yet, then check it out here to see what roles in the sector pay.

You can keep up with us on LinkedIn, Instagram, and find out more about us at teamwildpath.com.

About Me

I used to own a scuba diving school in the Caribbean but gave it up to follow the dream: being a writer. Now I help outdoor and nature-based brands find their voice, build the foundations for everything they write, and connect with their customers, employees and partners.

I followed a wiggly trail to get here. My background’s in customer service, which taught me to write for brands the hard way – by listening and responding to unhappy customers.

Writing has always been how I make sense of things. And long before I gave it a name, I was also using walks to think – taking a client brief out with me straight after a call, or walking myself out of being stuck on a problem. I use that same instinct with brand writing – going out to find clarity, rather than waiting for it to land on my desk.

And because I’m a fan of both walking and writing, I also write a Substack newsletter called The Writer's Walk where I explore how walking sparks creativity, together with interviewing outdoor people and writers about how they think and work.

How did I get into the outdoors?

I didn’t start with a plan, it started with a job I got by accident. I got a temp role working in the marketing team at The Caravan Club (now The Caravan and Motorhome Club). That led to a regional manager role and for almost 3 years I oversaw the management of several campsites across the UK. I spent more time outdoors than in the office in that job.

I then went on to co-own and run a small but busy scuba diving business in the Caribbean for 5 years. I wore every hat imaginable during that time. From planning the weekly dive schedule, servicing and repairing scuba gear, marketing and customer service, growing the business by building partnerships with local accommodation providers, and getting involved in an ambitious programme to define a set of operational standards for marine tourism providers across the world’s second-largest barrier reef. I also worked on two short educational films on scuba diving and snorkelling for Royal Caribbean, which they used to show on board their cruise ships.

Those roles taught me what it takes to run an outdoor business. The seasonality, the small teams doing 5 jobs each, the challenge of balancing the different objectives of the branding, marketing, sales and customer ops teams – and the pressure to get everything right.

Getting outdoors has influenced how I think and work ever since.

Favourite adventure or experience?

It’s hard to pick just one, but a strong contender is the research I did for a piece on saltmarsh, which was part of a project called 26 Habitats with writers’ organisation 26 and The Wildlife Trusts.

I knew nothing about saltmarsh, so I spent a lot of time walking around Rye Harbour Nature Reserve and Spurn National Nature Reserve to understand it. The phrase ‘the salt brings…’ kept popping into my head on those walks, and it ended up becoming the opening and closing line of the piece I wrote. And on every walk I took around both saltmarshes, I’d hear a cuckoo calling, so that made its way in as well.

It's what I love most about being a writer and helping people with their words. You can't make up that sort of detail at a desk – you have to go out and find it.

One mindset or bit of kit I always take with me?

A notebook and pen. I don't keep a formal journal, but I'm always scribbling down what I call ‘snippets’ – words I spot in the wild, fragments of overheard conversations, an unexpected phrase that solves a problem I've taken for a walk.

What am I looking for?

I’d love to work with outdoor and nature-based brands who are finding their voice and need to build the foundations for everything they write. That might be equipment manufacturers or retailers, brands working in travel, tourism and outdoor experiences, tech brands that help people get outdoors with their products, or charities and public sector orgs focused on opening up the outdoors for more people. I offer three core services:

1. Verbal identity: helping brands find their voice, define their messaging, share their story and connect with audiences.

2. Writing training: creating effective guidelines and training based on what the brand and its people needs to succeed with their words.

3. Fractional/interim head of writing: supporting growing brands who aren't ready to hire a copywriter, but want the foundations in place for when they do.
