The United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing (the Shakers) is a millenarian, restorationist Christian sect founded in 1747 in England. The sect began to organize in the US in the decade of the 1780s, becoming known as the “Shaking Quakers” due to their euphoric behavior during worship services. Women within the sects were spiritual leaders alongside men. There were women who were among the founders of the sect itself (Lucy Wright, Jane Wardley & Ann Lee. Upon leaving England, the Shakers settled into the Watervliet, New York (current-day Colonie) settlement in 1774.
